Vilified metal hips set for a comeback
The prosthetic metal hips that orthopedic surgeons have stopped using entirely could be making a surprising comeback. Danish researchers have laid bare the problems and discovered that the hips could be beneficial to certain patients.

The severely criticized hip-implant ASR had Dansk Ortopædisk Selskab (Danish Orthopedic Company) suspend the use of metal hips entirely. But the manufacturers of the prosthetic hip might have found a loophole, so the hip replacement could be used for Danish patients after all. For some patients this type of hip replacement is the best option, it turns out.
