Millionaire and award-winning researcher rejected again and again – then founded his own company

Award-winning researcher Robert Langer has founded 40 companies, holds more than 1300 patents and is in charge of 60 researchers in his own laboratory on MIT. But the road to success was paved with refusals, criticism and depression.

When Robert Langer, as newly graduated chemical engineer, got his first research job at Boston Children's Hospital in the 1970s, he applied for funding for a cancer project and received not only a negative response but also a verbal slap in the face:

"Robert Langer knows nothing about biology and he knows even less about cancer," he recalls the response.
