The portion of the world’s total medicine expenditure that goes to generic medicine will rise by 10 % - from 25 % in 2011 to 35 % in 2016 – according to a recent analysis from IMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics.
Not surprisingly, the increased market share of generic medicine is usurped from original products, and the share of total medicine expenditure for brand medicine will drop from 63 to 53 % over the five-year-period. The category “other” remains unchanged at 12 %.
